How to Start Your Fitness Journey

Not a lot of people talk about this, but jumpstarting a fitness journey is not a linear process. Personally, I’ve been trying to commit to my fitness goals since 2014. Initially, my prime goal was to lose weight and lower the number on the scale. After many setbacks, I am learning that it takes time, discipline and a few tricks.

HOW TO START YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY

  1. Plan your week and commit to a workout plan

It helps to plan your week and set realistic fitness goals based on your lifestyle. Maintaining a schedule is hard, but if you commit to working out a number of times per week it will help you become disciplined about the choices you make. In 2018, I was determined to do some kind of physical activity 5 times a week, ideally early in the morning. I sometimes could not wake up early enough to hit the gym, but my goal made me stop by after work to get that workout in.

2. Find what you like (or don’t hate as much)

To be honest, it’s all about trial and error. I first tried CrossFit then hitting the gym and everything in between (Barre and Zumba to name a few). What I’ve learned so far is that it’s not about what type of class, program or routine you try. Instead, it’s defining what drives you to keep showing up.

3. IT TAKES TIME!

This is the most important one. I was one to expect to see results the next day and that’s the reason why I would stop working out. This time I was determined to make it work, even started taking pictures to track my progress. It took a good four months for me to see tiny improvements, but I have not stopped since. In the process I learned the number on the scale does not mean what we think (topic for another post), so give yourself enough time and keep going, it will be worth it.

Fitness is a mindset of staying active, not the results of one day. Developing a routine is very important, it will suck at times but you’ll get in the habit of exercising and might even start to love it.

Love, Barbs.
